Boston Date Night Series: Captain Marvel Fan Event at Fenway Regal
Happy International Women’s Day! This post is SO fitting for today because I’m sharing my thoughts on the new Captain Marvel movie, a film jam-packed with girl power. Darren snagged tickets to the Regal Fenway Fan Event way back in early January and last night it was finally time! At this opening night event, we were able to see the movie early (it’s officially out in theaters today) and treated to fun collectibles + concessions deals – more on this later. Keep reading for a preview (no spoilers!) of Captain Marvel!
To give you a little synopsis of the film, Captain Marvel follows Vers, an extraterrestrial Kree warrior, who finds herself caught in the middle of a war between her people and the Skrulls (a shape-shifting alien race). However, while she is currently living and fighting with the Kree, she keeps having recurring flashbacks to another life as a U.S. Air Force Pilot named Carol Danvers on Earth. Teaming up with S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury and a few other friendly faces, she works to uncover the truth behind her past and fully harness her superpowers as Captain Marvel in order to end the war between the Kree and the Skrulls.
Whether you’re a huge Marvel fan or not, Captain Marvel is truly incredible. Brie Larson is a perfect fit, bringing just the right mix of power and emotion to the character. The supporting cast is just as strong, including Jude Law, Annette Benning, and Lashana Lynch. The action sequences are captivating, well-done, and not too drawn out (a major pet peeve of mine… *coughs* Man of Steel *coughs*). As I’m sure you’ll hear a lot, it’s pretty awesome to see a woman around my age kicking butt and taking names as “one of universe’s most powerful heroes.” Captain Marvel is definitely a hero women of all ages can look up to. Marvel fans also won’t be disappointed in the amount of detail put in to tying the movie back to the franchise and the upcoming Avengers: Endgame. This is a given with Marvel movies, but stay through the ending credits!!!
As mentioned, the fan event came with a few perks. In addition to seeing the film early, everyone received a free silver collectible coin upon entry and Regal Crown Club members (me!) also got a Regal-exclusive variant collectible coin, which featured the design in color (see below). There was also a $5 small drink and popcorn combo offered, but I was craving an ICEE so I chose to forgo that perk.
To wrap up our date night, Darren and I headed to Wahlburgers in Fenway for dinner. While a great place for takeout, we chose to sit down in the bar/restaurant area at the back. It was the perfect spot for us to sit and debrief the movie! I ordered the BBQ Bacon with onion rings, a 1/3 lb. burger with white cheddar, bacon, and housemade BBQ sauce. Darren got The Fiesta Burger, a 1/2 lb. burger dusted with housemade southwestern spice rub, fresh jalapeños, lettuce, pepper jack cheese, housemade salsa, chipotle mayo, and pickles. YUM!
It was a super fun night and I’m so glad I was able to see the movie. No plans this weekend? Grab a ticket to Captain Marvel – you won’t be disappointed!
