An Ode to Curtains

My new apartment has a lot of windows. It’s one of the many things that drew me to it. The natural light during the day is incredible. I used to have the back corner room in our old place, shrouded by the surrounding buildings and a tree. It was genuinely a challenge determining the weather on any given day because it always felt dark and gloomy. Now, I wake up to light pouring into my bedroom, even when it’s raining!

There are also three great windows in our living room overlooking the street corner. I had a strong decorative vision for the living room even before we moved in, and that vision started with curtains. We never got them for our old place – just the always-dusty, exposed mini blinds. So as soon as I could, I headed over to Christmas Tree Shops to pick out some curtains.

We have a grey sofa and loveseat, so I decided to go with blue as an accent color. I found the most beautiful sheer-style curtains in the perfect length for our frames (84”) and at an amazing price. They filter the light, but don’t stifle it. Surprisingly, they don’t turn the whole room blue when the sun hits them, which is also a plus. Since I wanted the blue color to be the statement, I hung them on ivory rods to match the wall paint. After this one little design feature was in place, the rest of the room came together. From plants on the small corner shelves, to couch pillows in a matching blue velvet, I’m so in love with this room.

I purchased the same set of sheers for my bedroom in an off-white/cream color. Because of our previous dungeon-like situation, I wanted to keep the room as bright as possible. All of our furniture is either black or white. To match this theme, I went with black curtain rods.

Long story short, if you’ve been contemplating curtains as a decorating choice, I highly recommend them. They add such a nice touch to a room, and make it feel a little more put together. To me, they’re a simple step you can take to elevate your space.
