Boston Date Night Series: A Cabaret + Fried Chicken in Inman Sqaure, Cambridge
The last two weeks have been full of music, theater, and good food. From seeing local productions to singing in small shows with my friends, it’s exciting to be getting back into a pastime I’ve enjoyed so much over the years.
On Thursday of last week, I had the pleasure of singing in Cabaret Y’all: Swing Into Spring, a jazzy iteration of a concert series featuring singers from the Boston theater community. It was held at this artsy little venue in Cambridge called The Lilypad. Darren, our friend Kelly, and I decided to perform “Been A Long Day” from How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. It was so much fun and we had such a supportive crowd. Check out the rest of the set list and performers here!
Afterwards, we decided to grab dinner with our friends who were also performing and those who came to see us. It was 9 o’clock at night, we hadn’t eaten since lunch, and had no plan of where to go. Luckily, just a few steps from the venue, we found the perfect spot!
A chicken/BBQ/tiki bar, Highland Fried is a unique spot with fun drinks and delicious food. Their menu is reminiscent of Sweet Cheeks Q (a Fenway favorite), where you can select a variety of chicken and BBQ options paired with mouth-watering sides. The majority of the crew enjoyed tiki cocktails, such as the Blue Lagoon – a mix of tequila, Orgeat, falernum, blue curacao, lime, and champagne complete with floating mermaids accessories. I, of course, got a Canada Dry.
For food, I settled on the 3 Piece Chicken Dinner with mac n’ cheese as my side and a buttermilk biscuit (my favorite part!). The chicken was yummy, but the mac n’ cheese and biscuit held my true affection. Everyone else ordered a variety of chicken and pulled pork dishes, all ending in rave reviews!
If you’re looking for an incredible BBQ/tiki combo (which to be honest, we never really knew we needed), Highland Fried is the place for you! Be sure to check in out next time you’re in Cambridge.
